Indian Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata)
The resin of the frankincense tree has been a sacred incense for thousands of years. It acts as a wound fluid in the bark, which the tree uses to seal and heal injuries to the trunk and branches. In Egypt, frankincense was not only used for religious ceremonies, but also for embalming the mummies of wealthy deceased due to its cleaning and disinfecting properties.
Less well known in this country is the millennia-long use of Indian frankincense (Boswellia Serrata, Sanskrit: Shallaki or Salai Guggal) in traditional Ayurveda. There the incense is used both as an ointment, e.g. for joint inflammation, broken bones, swollen glands and ulcers, as well as internally for all kinds of complaints and inflammations.
Until 1875, frankincense was also part of classic European naturopathy, mainly to alleviate rheumatic diseases, and can be found in pharmacological handbooks. Temporarily forgotten, frankincense is now enjoying increasing popularity again, not only as an incense, but also, especially, in connection with joint inflammation.
Rich in valuable boswellic acids
In addition to numerous essential oils (8-12%) and polysaccharides (20-45%), frankincense contains special resin acids, namely 5 - 8% boswellic acids, including in particular the main active ingredient acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid, in short: AKBA. All active ingredients of the frankincense plant and in particular the essential oils and resin acids form a synergistic complex. Boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the enzymes 5-lipoxygenase and COX (cytochrome c oxidase), which are responsible for the formation of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes and prostaglandins, and, according to the European EFSA authority, contribute to joint health from a dosage of 300-450 mg .
